Growth and better journeys

HS2 is a vital investment in Britain’s economic future. The railway supports the government’s mission to boost growth and improve journeys. It will play a key role in renewing our railways, making services reliable and putting passengers first.

Once operational, HS2 will add tens of thousands of seats each day and cut the journey between London and Birmingham to 49 minutes – 35% quicker than today’s fastest train. Journeys will be zero carbon, hassle-free and on-time.

Over 33,000 jobs are supported by the project and more than 3,400 UK-based businesses are helping to build the railway.

Programme overview

Across 140 miles of route, our construction teams are working every day to deliver what is the biggest upgrade to our rail network in over 100 years – a project that will shape the country’s future.

Our focus is to create a clear, realistic budget and timeline the government supports, and to ensure we deliver the transformational benefits of economic growth and vital new rail capacity between our two biggest cities.

While we re-sequence the programme, we’re focusing on essential work that safely accelerates construction and supports the reset – laying a secure foundation for the future delivery of the programme.
